What was to be pretty average weather turned into a glorious day at Long Bay this year for our annual Big Buddy Day Out. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of our summer event in Auckland on March 7th, more than 100 Big and Little Buddies came together for a fantastic day of surf, sand and sports at Long Bay Beach. Even the young men took to showing off their skills on the barbecue. There was some competitive cricket and volleyball happening, along with various games of croquet, soccer, rugby and Frisbee. We finished the day off with a mighty tug-of-war (where the boys nearly beat the men!) and of course, a lolly scramble. In his own words, Big Buddy Robert Barry shares his experience: “It was really good to meet other big buddies and exchange experiences and ask questions. I feel more empowered and affirmed after having a really good chat with a couple of the more experienced big buddies. It was also great to see some very long term pairings mixed with some recent ones, but most importantly it was great to see the little buddies engage with each other in such a friendly and positive manner.” Auckland Coordinator Steve Sobota said it was particularly inspiring to see the strong bonds that continue to grow between the boys and their Big Buddies. “What made this event so special was the growing number of mature matches and boys stepping up and introducing themselves and their Big Buddies. It was heart-warming to see how much the boys have grown in both confidence and stature and it gave the event a lot of heart.” We would like to thank all those who made it to the BBDO and to all those who have supported the event in various other ways, without you these events would not happen. We’d especially like to thank the team at Dominion Breweries who supplied sausages and soft drinks – they were much appreciated. Hope to see you all again next year.
